Quintessence

2026.05.18-31

Originating from TAEYANG’s new album QUINTESSENCE, this exhibition illustrates the process where music, words, matter, and space expand into a singular, unified experience. In ancient philosophy, 'Quintessence' signifies the fifth element—the purest essence that constitutes the world, transcending earth, water, air, and fire. In this project, QUINTESSENCE represents the essence of sensibility revealed through the emotions, memories, beliefs, questions, and music that TAEYANG has accumulated over time. The album features ten tracks across various genres, each revealing TAEYANG’s long-standing emotions, thoughts, and musical identity in distinct ways. Accordingly, the exhibition is structured around core words such as LOVE, FAITH, LIFE, TIME, SPACE, CHEMISTRY, LIGHT, TRUTH, ETERNITY, and THE END. These words, which also appear in the album's tracks, were selected as those closest to TAEYANG’s definition of 'Quintessence.' Rather than mere text, they serve as emotional coordinates that a human being repeatedly encounters through the passage of time. Each artwork manifests by transforming these words into forms of matter, light, time, and space. Many works in this exhibition began with TAEYANG’s initial ideas and were completed with his direct participation in the production process. He experimented with various methods to bring the emotional states of words into material forms. In ‘FAITH’ and ‘LOVE,’ TAEYANG used actual fire to scorch the letters, leaving physical traces and tension. For ‘LIFE,’ he collected 1988 issues of LIFE magazine, cutting out words to collage them onto mirrors, creating layers of time and memory. His ideas materialized into concrete forms throughout the exhibition—from juxtaposing mechanical and digital clocks to reveal differing flows of time, to embedding flowers and fallen leaves in resin to create a wooden bench. This process reflects an endeavor to move beyond symbolic language, capturing raw sensations and the vestiges of time. Initiating from TAEYANG's vision, the exhibition expands into an immersive spatial experience through the curation and spatial design of Working With Friend. Sculptures by artist Wonwoo Lee and documentation by Jungwook Mok join together to complete the entire exhibition as a material landscape. Furthermore, TAEYANG’s album photographs, captured by Deokhwa Zhang and Narang Choi, are installed throughout the space, visually extending the connection between the music and the exhibition. Visitors will move through a single fluid current—listening to the music, seeing the images, and walking among the artworks. Rather than an exhibition that merely explains an album, it is closer to a singular scene that allows you to spatially experience 'QUINTESSENCE'—the very core of the emotions and questions that define TAEYANG as an artist. QUINTESSENCE

At the entrance of the exhibition stands a large-scale, cast aluminum sculpture by artist Wonwoo Lee. Reminiscent of a natural stone, this artwork materializes the very concept of QUINTESSENCE. Engraved onto its surface are the track titles from the album, each presented as a typographic logo that visually compresses the mood and genre of the music. In this space, visitors encounter the world of the album for the first time, stepping into the starting point where music and exhibition converge.

SPACE

On the first floor, the listening bar plays TAEYANG’s album QUINTESSENCE. A fabric artwork suspended from the ceiling is inscribed with the word SPACE, visually capturing the scene of musical vibrations expanding throughout the room. Visitors do not merely hear the music; they sense and experience it through the entirety of the space.

LIFE

LIFE is a piece created by cutting out the iconic logo of the 1988 LIFE magazine and layering them over a mirror. At the center, a void in the shape of a cross remains, and the artwork finds its completion as the viewer's own reflection is cast within it. The repetition of the word LIFE juxtaposed with the hollow center illustrates the realization that life, ultimately, returns to oneself.

LOVE

Spanning across a 200-ho canvas, LOVE is a work created by TAEYANG using actual fire. The soot and traces left upon the surface expose the temperature and inherent wounds of love; yet, even amidst the flames, the word LOVE ultimately endures without fading. Photographs documenting the creation process are exhibited alongside the piece.

FAITH

FAITH is an artwork that demonstrates how belief is forged through trembling and testing. Even upon the scorched canvas and damaged surface, the word FAITH remains intact, symbolizing a state of conviction that grows clearer and more resilient after passing through trials.

TIME

The TIME bench features a walnut top set upon resin structures formed into the shapes of each letter of the word TIME. Encased within the resin are various symbols of disparate timelines, such as clock parts, fallen leaves, and artificial flowers. Lingering on this bench, visitors experience a sensation where past and present, natural and artificial time, overlap.

CHEMISTRY

The CHEMISTRY space is an environmental installation composed of light, fog, and neon. The lightning-like repetitions of light and the fog diffusing through the air visualize the invisible energy and tension generated between individuals. Within this constantly shifting light, visitors sense the fleeting, momentary reactions of relationships.

TRUTH

Set within a darkened space is a single small lightbulb and the word TRUTH, written in TAEYANG’s own handwriting. Revealed by the faint illumination, the word shows that truth is not something that always manifests itself loudly, but rather something discovered in the quiet moments when one stops to gaze intently.

ETERNITY

On the floor of the TRUTH space, the word ETERNITY is installed in the form of a carpet. Walking over these words, visitors pass through the final scene of the exhibition. This piece conveys the sentiment that eternity is not some distant future, but rather something fashioned within the experience of the present moment.

LIGHT

In front of the CHEMISTRY space hangs a curtain inscribed with the word LIGHT. Passing through this curtain, visitors enter an environment composed of light, electricity, and fog. Rather than a mere entrance, LIGHT functions as a symbolic gateway into a world of unseen energy and sensation. The aura of light leaking from beyond the curtain hints at the atmosphere of the next room, guiding visitors across the threshold and into another sensory dimension of the exhibition.

THE END

At the gateway leading to the final area of the exhibition hangs a curtain inscribed with the words THE END. Passing through it, visitors step into the TRUTH space, the final scene of the exhibition. THE END does not simply mark the conclusion of a show; it acts as a final scene reached only after traversing multiple layers of emotion and time. As visitors pass through this curtain to conclude the exhibition's narrative flow, the movement feels akin to stepping directly into the final frame after a film comes to a close.
