Gyuhan Lee transforms everyday brand packaging into new sculptural objects. From disposable materials like McDonald’s wrappers and Nike shoeboxes—produced and discarded with ease—he uncovers traces of a particular era’s culture and patterns of consumption. By layering traditional Korean hanji paper and handcraft techniques onto these mass-produced remnants, he creates a tension between the disposable and the artisanal. In this process, a single sheet of paper or an ordinary box, once destined for the trash, is reborn with new meaning and value. In this showcase Walk-Thru, he presents two works of Joopiter Editions and sixteen Upcycled Editions.

The Joopiter Edition, a collaboration with Pharrell Williams’ platform JOOPITER, consists of light sculptures printed with Pharrell’s signature gestures using silkscreen techniques over McDonald’s packaging. The repetition of the McDonald’s logo becomes a uniform visual pattern, while the overlaid emoticons act as alternative logos, reinterpreting the familiar imagery with a new narrative.

The Upcycled Edition extends his iconic McDonald’s Light Series, this time using Happy Meal bags as the primary material. Introduced in 1979 and marketed to children, Happy Meals have long featured collaborations with popular characters of the time—many of whom appear printed directly on the packaging. These characters serve as cultural time stamps, capturing the zeitgeist of their era. The works in this showcase incorporate bags from the years 1993 to 2007. More than simply upcycled lighting, the artist invites viewers to reconsider familiar symbols from an unfamiliar perspective—casting a gentle light on the consumer culture embedded within them.
